Joint Institutes' Postdoctoral Positions at the IMA

Application deadline has passed

Pending funding approval the IMA offers two types of postdoctoral appointments in this program. These positions are two-year appointments.

  1. New Directions Postdoctoral Fellowships are for candidates who are interested in participating in the 2009-10 Annual Program on Complex Fluids and Complex Flows, but do not have prior experience in the field. Candidates are asked to name two possible mentors for the first year of the fellowship, one from the list of IMA long-term visitors during 2009-2010 and one from the University of Minnesota's School of Mathematics faculty. One of these mentors should have expertise in the candidate's current field, the other expertise in the Annual Program's theme. The postdoctoral fellow may spend the second year continuing his/her research at the IMA, be placed at another US university (possibly with light teaching duties assigned, depending on the University), or take an Industrial Internship at one of the IMA's Participating Corporations. Successful applicants must submit a research plan for year 2 of the fellowship some time before June 1, 2010 for approval by the IMA. Details on the application procedure are given below. Selection is based on the candidate's qualifications, the match with proposed mentors, and the potential to contribute to the research topic of the annual program.
  2. Postdoctoral Industrial Internships place successful candidates in one of IMA's partner corporations working on a year-long project. Descriptions of the internships are provided below. Applicants should specify up to two internship possibilities in which they are interested. For the second year, the postdoctoral fellow may choose to work on a different internship (possibly with the same company) or be placed at another US university (possibly with light teaching duties assigned, depending on the University). A research plan for year 2 must be submitted by June 1, 2010 for approval. Selection is based on qualifications and the match with the company project and mentor.

The following is a list of available projects. More projects are coming, please check back for updates to this page.

To apply, the candidate should follow the application instructions on the Joint Institutes' Postdoctoral Fellowship web page and the guidelines below.

Applications are due by April 10. It is expected that the first round of offers will be made by April 15, pending anticipated funding from the NSF. Applicants are required to:

  1. Submit standard application materials at MathJobs.Org (choose the Postdoc position for the employer "Mathematics Institutes").
  2. Submit a separate letter of interest using the Math Institutes online form.

For applicants to the New Directions Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, the statement of interest submitted via the online form (see step 2), should specify two Mentors with whom the candidate might work (see Program description above for specifics regarding the roles of the two mentors, and the lists of available mentors).

For applicants to the Postdoctoral Industrial Internship Program, the statement of interest submitted via the online form (see step 2) should specify one or two internship possibilities in which they are interested (see list above).
