FUTURE HOME
In the fall of 2009 I will be joining the University of Portland Mathematics Department.
EDUCATION
Ph.D., Mathematics, Vanderbilt University, August 2007
M.S., Mathematics, Vanderbilt University, May 2003
B.A., Mathematics with minors in Computer Science and Music, Wesleyan College, May 2001
RESEARCH
I am interested in the areas of mathematical biology and biomathematics education. My Ph.D. research focused on the application of differential equations to cellular signaling pathways. In particular, I worked on the development and mathematical analysis of an ordinary differential equations model of the uridine 5'-diphosphate signaling pathway in the RAW 264.7 macrophage. From May 2004 to July 2007 I conducted my research in the H. Alex Brown lab in the Vanderbilt Pharmacology Department. While in the lab, I also helped to develop new methodology pertinent to my model as well as performed the necessary experiments to obtain missing parameters for the model.
Since my arrival at the IMA, I have continued my research in cellular signaling and have also become interested in the modeling of cell motility, in collaboration with my mentor, Hans Othmer. Click here for a brief yet more detailed explanation of my current research in cell motility. I have also recently started collaborations with researchers in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota. Our primary research involves the development and analysis of Model Eliciting Activities (MEAs). One of my long-term goals in math education is to enhance current biomath curricula (particularly at the undergraduate level) and, in doing so, to spark more student interest in the beauty, relevance, and importance of mathematics in our everyday lives.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Summer 2009:
TEACHING
Courses I've taught at the University of Minnesota Mathematics Department:
MATH 2373: Linear Algegra and Differential Equations for IT students
OTHER INTERESTS
I recently completed the Twin Cities marathon (my first marathon) with Team in Training to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Additional interests include playing guitar and singing, snowboarding, surfing, volleyball, softball, tennis, cycling, and most anything outdoors.
