A generic configuration of three spheres determines several sextic
curves, all related to the curve of common tangents. First among them,
the direction-sextic, which records only the direction of these
tangents, retains in fact, as a planar projective complex curve,
enough information for reconstructing the sphere configuration, up to
similarity.

I shall discuss properties of this family of sextics and the resulting
criterion for classifying configurations.
