The theory of endoscopy has been created by Langlands based on insights gained from the study of points on Shimura varieties. It had a broad impact on local and automorphic representation theory. Being a phenomenon of arithmetic nature, endoscopy theory manifests itself in the study of the geometry of the Hitchin fibration which a priori has entirely different mathematical flavour and origin. Endoscopy allowed us to discover new phenomena in the Hitchin fibration and inversely, the Hitchin fibration provided geometric tools to solve some harmonic analytic problems which arose in endoscopy theory.
